“From the foothills to the Catskills, my blood spills Appalachian.
My people sailed Atlantic Avenue to Eastern America
Started in New England, moved down to the South,
Wed and planted the seeds of a Blue Family on a Druid City Drive”
Beneath these Oaks my Grandma spoke, “Mama - one of these seeds
Had daughters and sons - of 4 of us children, the oldest one was me.
Then I had my own three, your mother the baby, then came you and your brothers
Your maternal trail’s full of many tales of branches on your tree.”
Her story lines the map of my heart
Planted in an Alabama garden
It marks the memory and pain
Of our childhood-days, the canopy of our family life
From the live oak, to the magnolia, we are an arboretum
And we grew up here together and weathered hurricanes
Gathered round at Christmas, swam in summertime
Mourned in times of loss, danced in times of shine, shared whiskey in the evening light
And around the table, we’d share the fables - some we’ve heard before
Bout aunts and uncles, and cousins, and legends of our family lore
Spoke of parents’ behavior and how it was taken with the ones they bore
And we laugh and we cry and we live and we die together on this drive
These stories line the map of my heart
Planted in an Alabama garden
It marks the memory and the pain and the beauty of
Of our childhood-days, the canopy of our family life
Woah, Blue Druids
Life’s passages, we all go threw em
Let’s sing a carol
To our special love
Our branches tangle into
One another
And just like my grandma said so
When your time comes to go
In our memory and blood
In our love and our words
We will carry you on
